Do you ever wake up so tired that your eyes ache and barely open?
That was me today.
I felt like I’d fought my way out of a coma, and sleep was clawing me back in.
The definition for zombie, walking dead, does not apply here.
I hadn’t the energy to move, let alone walk.
Why am I so tired today?
Six hours of sleep is what I had, which is normal for me.
Nothing out of the ordinary happened.
- I don’t recall restless sleep or night terrors last night.
- My daughters and wife didn’t wake me up.
- No paranormal activity or alien abductions.
Then, I remember that I started taking new vitamins and supplements for energy.
That being the only oddity I can think of, I investigate the bottles.
Rhodiola Root says nothing about side effects related to sleep.
Vitamin B has been part of my daily routine for a long time.
I didn’t have any Zipfizz yesterday.
Then, I find the potential cause of my sleep problem.
I started taking 5-HTP for mood improvement.
What I failed to note is how it works.
Basically, 5-HTP boosts serotonin production, which boosts melatonin levels.
The increase in melatonin leads to relaxation and deeper sleep.
This is great, if I set aside enough time for sleep.
The problem is, 6 hours isn’t enough time.
When my alarm sounds, my body is 2 hours from being ready to wake.
I basically fed my body all the ingredients for a good night’s rest, and then pulled back the offer mid way through.
From now on, I either need to have a full 8 hours for sleep, or avoid 5-HTP if I expect to wake up in the morning.
